Peterborough Trading Standards Service - Wising UP online

Peterborough Trading Standards Service

Many people will have heard Trading Standards referred to as the ‘weights and measures’ department. Although one of the main roles of the service is checking weights and measures for accuracy, there is a lot more going on to ensure that the people of Peterborough are not being ripped off.

About us:

We are here to protect the interests of Peterborough consumers and businesses by maintaining a fair and safe trading environment. We have a statutory duty to enforce a wide range of legislation and work with businesses in order to create a level playing field for consumers and businesses.

The work of the Trading Standards Department can be divided into 4 main areas:

Trading Standards has a duty to enforce a number of Acts ranging from Consumer Credit, Fair Trading, Trade Descriptions, Prices and many more. Officers inspect local shops, manufacturers and importers  to ensure they are complying with the law. Where the law is being broken, Trading Standards has the power to caution or prosecute.

Consumer Direct is a national helpline for consumers offering clear and practical consumer advice on buying goods and services. If goods are faulty or work has not been done to a reasonable standard, Consumer Direct Advisors will let you know where you stand. They will also pass information to your local Trading Standards department if a trader has broken the law or using unfair practices.

Trading Standards receives many complaints each year showing that consumers and businesses are not aware of their rights and responsibilities. It is recognized that many complaints could have been avoided if consumers and businesses were better informed. Peterborough Trading Standards Service has a specific project plan to educate people and create confident consumers informed businesses.

Some businesses require a license if they sell explosives such as fireworks. These licenses are issued by Trading Standards and officers visit these trade premises to ensure that the seller is complying with the requirements of the license.
